Well, hello there, dear friend! 🙂
I hope you had a great Christmas!
I typically write a short year-end recap. I’ve attempted to write this thing a few times, but… it’s boring. So, instead, I’ll share with you my very favorite (very simple) moment from this year.
Just a couple weeks back, Bridget and I were making in-person deliveries of Christmas grams, consisting of sugar cookies, a decorating kit, balloons, and a personal note. My elementary school did this when I was a kid and I LOVED it because it made me feel so special any time I was the recipient. So… what better way to simply bring a smile to some faces at the end of this year?
Well, we made a secret Santa delivery to a young guy who we’ll call John. We’d never met John, John had never heard of us, and we had no idea what ties he had to us, if any. We knocked on his door, asked for John, and saw the happily confused look on his face as he said, “Um… I’m John.”
We informed him that a secret Santa had purchased this Christmas gram to be delivered to him, to which he asked, “Are you sure they meant to send it for me?” After a few moments of disbelief, he said, “This is amazing. I’m always the forgotten one.”
Not this Christmas, Johnny Boy!
We stood and chatted with John for a few minutes, talked about his Christmas plans, and saw his eyes well up as we handed him this simple gift from this generous secret Santa.
And then we left.
As we walked away, Bridget said, “I love John. He’s amazing.” And I agreed. John made our year.
We drove away to our next delivery, but kept saying “Wow” about our interaction with John. It had absolutely nothing to do with Speak Your Silence’s mission (to help those affected by sexual abuse and assault move forward to live great lives)… and yet… everything.
I’ve always said that we’re not really a sexual abuse and assault organization – we’re an organization focused on affirming people’s innate value and worth. And our little moment with John – made possible by a very kind and generous secret Santa – fulfilled our mission as powerfully as I think I’ve ever seen since this all began.
It really is the simplest of things that end up mattering the most.
So, as we cap off 2020, I’m eager to look forward to the future. We’re grateful for each and every one of you who’s been a part of our mission, whether for a long time or just as of late. Our mission isn’t an easy one and it never has been. But, the biggest impact is made by you each time you simply mention us to someone who could use our help, or when you do something as simple as order a Christmas gram for someone who simply needs to know they’re loved.
Thank you for making 2020 a very special year in it’s own way. We’re looking forward to having our bus out and about in Boise again soon, seeing your smiling faces, and helping one person at a time realize their worth and move forward to live the amazing life they’re meant to live. 🙂
Cheers to you, my friends! Here’s to special things to come in 2021!
